.Katie wins prize for outstanding research


Cirencester's Katie Kipling received an award for excellence when she
graduated from Harper Adams University College, Shropshire.

Katie, 22, was presented with the Tom Barron Independent Hatcheries
Award 2008. The award goes to the best final year student who submits
an outstanding final assignment on intensive poultry husbandry systems.

She received her award from Doug Kirby, national pullet sales manager
for Tom Barron Independent Hatcheries.

Dr Sandy Mackenzie, animal production and science lecturer, said:
"Katie is graduating as one of our first cohorts from BSc (Hons) in
Bioveterinary Science.

"Her honours research project, for which she is receiving today's
award, was titled - 'Alternative methods for quantification of intestinal
pathogens in broilers". This involved the identification of the bacterial
species by means of the DNA present within the digestive tract in
broiler chickens.

Katie is taking up a place at Liverpool Universiaty to study Veterinary
Science.

Katie from Siddington, Cirencester, Gloucestershire, previously
attended Cirencester College and Cirencester Kingshill School.
