New regional chick sales manager
Richard Jones has been appointed the new regional sales and technica
manager forTom Barron Independent Hatcheries in Wales, West Midlands
and part of the west of England.

He replaces John Durkee who has now retired after working in the poultry
industry for more than 35 years including five years with Tom Barron,
UK distributor for ISA and Shaver egg laying strains.

Retirement ends 30-year link with ISA layers
General manager Stephen Turner presents a bottle of vintage port and
some china items to John Durkee who retired at the end of May as
area sales and technical manager for Wales and the Border counties
after an association with ISA layers stretching back more than 30 years.

Originally he was due to retire two years ago, and received a cheque
from the company at that time and a snooker cue and waistcoat from
his colleagues, but subsequently opted to stay on for another two years
in a part-time role.

Roy bowls them over
Roy Brown, area sales manager in Northern Ireland, holds the
Elanco Shield for his success in the annual ten-pin bowling competition.
He had the top score of 178 on the night.

The trophy was presented to the Northern Ireland Poultry Association
by Elanco Animal Health in 1990.

New area sales manager for Scotland, Cumbria and East Yorkshire
New regional technical sales manager for Scotland, Cumbria and East
Yorkshire is James Wignall who joined Tom Barron Independent Hatcheries
in November 2008 with more than 10 years experience in the poultry sector.

James obtained his National Certificate in Poultry Husbandry at the Scottish
Agricultural College, and then gained experience with T & J Wignall working with
both commercial and parent stock. From June 2006 James provided technical
and sales support in Scotland and the north of England for Farm Fresh Hatchery,
so is familiar with the area he will now cover for Tom Barron.

2008
Katie wins prize for outstanding research
Cirencester's Katie Kipling received an award for excellence when she
graduated from Harper Adams University College, Shropshire.

Katie, 22, was presented with the Tom Barron Independent Hatcheries
Award 2008. The award goes to the best final year student who submits
an outstanding final assignment on intensive poultry husbandry systems.

She received her award from Doug Kirby, national pullet sales manager
for Tom Barron Independent Hatcheries.

Roy Brown meets Liverpool legend
Roy Brown our sales / technical manager in Northern Ireland recently met
Liverpool legend Ian Rush.

Ian travelled to Northern Ireland with the Wales U16 team who played
against the Northern Ireland U16 team at Mourneview Park in Lurgan
on 16th November 2008.

Peter Dean, described as playing a central role in reshaping egg packing
and retailing through more than two decades, is the 25th recipient of the
prestigious ISABROWN award for services to the poultry industry.

New appointment as hatchery looks to the future
A highly experienced Indian poultry specialist, Sharma Praveen Kumar, has been
appointed manager of the Tom Barron hatchery at Catforth, near Preston.

The appointment comes at a time when the hatchery is undergoing a major investment
programme to expand production of ISABROWN, ISA Warren and Shaver chicks.

ISA Warren heads for further sales milestone
Chick suppliers, Tom Barron, are stepping up production of the ISA Warren
egg layer as demand continues to grow for the UK’s newest strain.

Sales are now heading towards 3.5 million since the layer was launched in the
UK and Ireland just over two years ago, with delivery of the three millionth chick
due to take place in early May.

Top chick salesman retires in Northern Ireland
One of Northern Ireland’s best known chick salesmen, Cecil Dorman, has retired
after 40 years but intends to retain his links with the egg industry.

Since he moved to chick suppliers R A Wright in 1972, he has been the ‘front man’
for the Warren / ISABROWN breed which has been the country’s market leader for
m
ost of that period.

First time success for egg producer
West Country farmer Ken Cottey is celebrating his decision to move into egg
production — winning an award for his first flock of free range layers.

The flock of 6500 ISABrown layers at Higher Buckland Farm, Buckland St Mary,
Chard, Somerset, won the trophy presented by Deans Foods for the top free
range flock in the region.

The award is based on performance analysis covering data on all eggs graded by
Deans over a flock’s life and related to total egg value / bird. Mr Cottey’s flock laid
317eggs / bird to 72 weeks of age, which amounted to an egg value of
£17.96 — £1.25 over the Deans standard.
